The definition
What counts
Every street in Toronto with at least one home on it.
A street is done when I’ve walked every block of it that someone lives on. So a street that’s residential for three blocks and industrial for two is done at three.
Expressways, ramps, private roads and stretches with no homes aren’t in the count. Named laneways are, if people live on them, and they’re counted separately so they don’t quietly inflate the total.
The numbers come from the city’s own street data, filtered to the segments that carry address numbers. That’s the test for whether someone lives there, and it’s not a judgement I get to make. It also means I can’t adjust the denominator when it starts feeling like a lot.
If you think a street should or shouldn’t be in the count, tell me. I’d rather argue about the definition now than quietly change it later.
